A veterinarian entering the alternative route is, essentially, mixing and matching the various components that make up a formalised residency. It is not ideal for the individual concerned, who may miss out on the advantages that a formalised residency provides. However, for a veterinarian with family or business commitments which preclude a full time three-year residency, it may be the only option.
